The text, unfortunately, does not provide the rounded and comprehensive study of these works that the title suggests; its origin in a conference is all too apparent in the disparate approaches of the contributors. Although the first six chapters deal chronologically with the sonatas, and individually offer many worthwhile insights, there is no guiding purpose, and none of the three topics in the title--history, criticism and performance--is dealt with overall in a coherent manner; it is rather as if a narrow beam of light were shone into a very large pitch-black space, illuminating a few intriguing features, but giving little indication of their relationship to the whole.
